All's well that ends well

So Tena’s iPhone project…

I replaced the screen (the glass portion of the phone) and the digitizer on her phone, and in the process screwed up her LCD.

Word to the wise, unlike many of the videos about how to disassemble the iPhone, DON’T pry on the LCD. If you apply too much force, the LCD will crack. Where you want to pry is on the metal on the bottom sides of the LCD assembly. Step 11 of these instructions shows you the right way to do it. Don’t do it any other way!!

So, doing it the wrong way broke the screen. I didn’t take a picture of the screen out of pure shame to botching the repair. Suffice to say, the screen was working fine but the bottom 1″x.5″ of the LCD was all white and rainbow-y. That worked for Tena up until I could fix that.

The moment I broke the screen I ordered another LCD off Ebay. I searched for someone “local,” i.e. not in China. That was on Thursday night. The LCD arrived on Monday.

Swapping the LCD is easy. All you have to do is pull out two screws on the bottom, open up the phone, remove six tiny screws and then reverse. No problem I thought. I gave myself 15 minutes to do it.

And then the phone didn’t power on.

*crap*

Now what? Ok, let’s reseat the connectors. Nothing. Hard reset? Nothing.

I’m out of options here.

I lose a bunch of sleep the next couple nights. The last thing I want to do is break a friend’s toy. I don’t do stuff like that. I’m responsible for it. (Yes, Tena, I know if you’re reading it you’ll say I’m not)

So she takes it into the Apple store. “It stopped working.” Which is, in fact, not fibbing at all. It did stop working. With a bit of help from me.

“Hmm…” looking at the phone with an otoscope. (I’m guessing he was looking for water damage) “In cases like this we just give you a new one.”

I’ve rarely sighed with such relief.
