Route to Alaska – Part 1

We’re planning on going through the northern US on the way west hitting a couple key places along the way.

Overall we’re looking to leave on July 17th and head west. The first day or two are going to be long days. I’ve been thinking of actually heading out after work on the 16th and try to make it to Chicago or something. I figure that’ll let us relax a bit more on the 17th and let us see a few more sights along the way.

The first thing that’ll let us know we’re on vacation is when we roll through Deadwood, SD (yeah, so a lot of it was because we’re fans of the show on HBO). I don’t think we’ll stay a whole lot there, but we want to al least say we’ve been there. Just a bit down the road is Devils Tower; again it’s a “lets’s see this thing” and move on. I don’t anticipate staying a long time on this trip.

I can imagine, if this wasn’t just a “transport day” that we’d be able to spend a day or two at any of these places. Next time.

The first real rest break will be getting to the BMW Annual Rally in Gillette, WY. I’m hoping to roll into town on Friday in the afternoon. Set up camp, kick back, and relax. We’ll spend the next couple days here hanging out with some like-minded folks.

On Sunday we’ll roll out west. Destination: Yellowstone!
